Around the Horn

The Hornets battled the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday but they were also going against a patch of hitting woes which resulted in only two runs in two games.

Game 1 Breakdown

- Virginia Wesleyan got on the board first following a home run in the top of the 2nd

- The Hornets squandered a chance in the bottom of the 2nd, leaving the bases loaded

- The Marlins added two more in the top of the 3rd but the Hornets responded with a run of their own coming from a sacrifice fly by junior Matt Ward which brought in sophomore Thomas Powell

- VWC would add two more runs, one in the top of the 5th and 8th innings to secure the victory at 5-1

- Senior Zack Engelmann threw a solid 7.1 innings striking out four Marlins

Game 2 Breakdown

- Lynchburg opened the scoring early after a blast over the right field fence from junior Luke Rodgers, pushing the Hornets out ahead 1-0

- The lead was short lived as the Marlins came back with two runs in the top of the 3rd to go up 2-1

- VWC added three more in the next two innings and added three insurance runs in the top of the 7th to finish the sweep, 8-1

The Hornets will play the Lions of Piedmont College next Friday, Apr. 21 on Fox Field at 3:00 p.m.
