Lerro's hat trick pushes field hockey over Marlins

Lynchburg, Va. -- Lynchburg College's field hockey team fought its way to a narrow 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Shellenberger Field Friday evening.

The Hornets got a hat trick from freshman Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Hornets got off to a hot start but were unable to break through until a pair of freshmen, Emily Dudley (Westminster, Md.) and Lerro, hooked up for a goal shortly after an Emma Strouse (Dillsburg, Pa.) penalty corner.

- Lerro tacked on Lynchburg's second goal exactly a minute later on a breakaway.

- Early in the second half, Lerro picked up the third when Lacey Elliott (Newport News, Va.) played a ball in front of the cage that the freshman finished for the ODAC-leading 17th score of the season.

- The Marlins broke up the shutout in the 66th minute.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg hits the road for Winchester on Sunday, Oct. 15 to take on defending ODAC champion Shenandoah starting at 2 p.m.
