Around the Horn

The first game featured a back and forth affair as the teams scored all their runs in between the 2nd and 4th innings with the Eagles squeaking by the Hornets in their first game of the season, 3-2. The second game was a different story as the Hornets rocked the Eagles pitching staff for 13 runs, including a 9 run barrage in the bottom of the first inning. Lynchburg allowed three in the 3rd inning but responded with one in the bottom half of the inning and then two in the 4th inning to mercy rule Mary Washington in 5 innings.

Game 1 Breakdown

- The Eagles opened the scoring after a throwing error by the Hornets allowed a run to cross the plate in the top of the 2nd

- One more run would come across in the same half inning as a groundout to the shortstop allowed Mary Washington to extend their lead to 2-0

- Pinch runner junior MacKenzie Mount slid into home after a pitch went off the catcher's mitt, all the way to the backstop

- Mary Washington would score the deciding run in the top of the 3rd inning after a single to right field scored a runner on third

- The Hornets were able to get another run across after Dickens singled up the middle driving in pinch runner freshman Sarah Ridgeway in the bottom of the fourth

- Sophomore Taylor Mabry went 2 for 2 while Dickens went 2 for 3 with an RBI

- Freshman Stephanie Hogan tossed 5 solid innings of relief, allowing only one hit while striking out five Eagles

Game 2 Breakdown

- The Hornets exploded in the bottom of half of the first inning for nine runs including a three-run home run from sophomore Brittany Coffey

- The Hornets added another run in the bottom of the second as Hogan launched a dinger to left center, extending the Hornets lead to 10-0

- The Eagles got some momentum going with a productive 3rd inning, scoring three runs off solid hitting and one Lynchbrug error

- Senior Kayla St. John hit a sac fly to right field scoring Mount in the bottom of the 3rd inning

- Following a sac bunt by Dickens, freshman Kayla Hugate moved to second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch, finally being driven in by a single off the bat of sophomore Mackenzie Chitwood

- The Hornets added another run in the botttom of the 4th after Hogan hit a ball that the shortstop could not backhand, which allowed Chitwood to cross the plate

- Sophomore Taylor Mabry moved to 3-0 on the season after throwing 4.0 innings and striking out five batters

On Deck

The Hornets return to action this Thursday, Mar. 2nd with a doubleheader against Averett. The twin bill will be played on Moon Field and first-pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
