HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins wasted no time, scoring on a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the first to take the lead. VWU doubled up the advantage in the second.
Lynchburg counter-punched in the top of the third when Commons took 2017 national player of the year Hanna Hull deep to right field, bringing home junior first baseman Mackenzie Chitwood (Ferrum, Va.), Mabry, and herself and cutting the lead to 4-3.
Hull would have the last laugh, though, as she retired the last seven Hornets for her 12th victory of the year as the Marlin offense poured on the offense to win 11-3 in 5 innings.
Scoreless through 3 ½ innings, Virginia Wesleyan finally got to senior pitcher Conner English (Altavista, Va.) in the fourth with a solo homer. The Marlins tagged English for three more in the following inning.
Lynchburg couldn't respond until the seventh when Mabry slammed a solo shot to left field, but the Hornets couldn't make up any more ground.
Lynchburg will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, March 27 when Shenandoah comes to town for a double dip on Moon Field. Lynchburg will celebrate Staff Appreciation Day during the games, which start at 2:30 p.m.
