Women's basketball blows by Averett in opener

Danville, Va. -- Caroline Naumann (Mechanicsville, Va.) had a double-double, Brittany Afolabi-Brown (Montgomery Village, Md.) added 15 points, and Lynchburg College's women's basketball team blew by Averett, 60-42, in both teams' season-opener Wednesday evening.

It was the third-straight victory in a season opener for Lynchburg, which enters the season looking for its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

- Lynchburg leapt out to a 19-8 lead after the first period, powered by four points apiece from Afolabi-Brown and Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.). Shephard, a returning All-ODAC honoree, finished with six points and six rebounds.

- After the Hornets took a 31-15 lead into halftime, freshman Jules Misenheimer (East Aurora, N.Y.) helped LC expand it with five third-quarter points. She finished with 11 points, including a 3-of-7 showing from 3-point territory, in her Lynchburg debut.

- Naumann's 14 points and 11 rebounds marked a double-double, and point guard Olivia DeFrancesco (Greensboro, N.C.) dished out seven assists.



Lynchburg will hit the road this weekend for Baltimore, Md., where they will play two games at Johns Hopkins' annual tournament. LC will take on the host Blue Jays at a time to-be-determined Saturday at 2 p.m. and will play an opponent TBD on Sunday.
