Women's basketball comes back to beat Mary Washington

Lynchburg, Va. -- Behind Caroline Naumann's (Mechanicsville, Va.) third double-double of the season, the Lynchburg College women's basketball team erased an early deficit to down Mary Washington, 54-49, in Tuesday night's home-opener at Turner Gymnasium.

Naumann, the senior all-conference forward, scored a game-high 20 points to go with 13 rebounds to lead the way for Lynchburg. The senior was 10 for 11 from the free throw stripe.

Junior forward Molly Shephard (Charlottesville, Va.) chipped in 13 points and seven boards for Lynchburg.

- The visiting Eagles rushed out front early, leading 17-4 just six minutes into the game. Naumann and junior forward Alex Allen (China Grove, N.C.) teamed up to cut the lead to two with a 10-0 run at the start of the second quarter, however, and Naumann's free throws gave LC its first lead of the game, 24-23, with 4:41 left 'til halftime.

- The Hornets maintained a narrow lead headed into intermission. Naumann had 11 of her 20 points in the first half.

- Mary Washington took the lead back early in the third period on a Taylor Barton jumper and led for the rest of the quarter.

- Lynchburg took the lead for good with 6:05 remaining in the game on an Olivia DeFrancesco (Greensboro, N.C.) 3-pointer.



The Hornets will take off for the Thanksgiving holiday this weekend before resuming the non-conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at home against Ferrum College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
