Salem, Va. -- Lynchburg College's women's soccer team defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles, 2-0 at the Roanoke College Kick-off Tournament, in Friday's season opener to bring head coach Dr. Todd Olsen his 400th win at Lynchburg.

Caitlin Mertens (Succsunna, N.J.) scored both goals in the last five minutes of the game, aided by an assist from Sarah Hammock (Virginia Beach, Va.) on the second. Delia LoSapio (Raleigh, N.C) posted a shutout with two saves in goal for the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game's first half proved uneventful, with a 0-0 score heading into halftime.

  • Lynchburg totaled five corner kicks in the second half, but didn't take advantage of any.

  • Junior Caitlin Mertens had a breakaway with less than four minutes left in the game to score the Hornets first goal.

  • Two minutes later, Mertens scored again with a cross from junior Sarah Hammock securing the Hornets' victory.

Next in the Roanoke College Kick-off the Hornets will face St. John Fisher on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 3 p.m.
