Offense stands tall in Salem

Salem, Va. --   Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, NJ) netted two goals as the Lynchburg women beat the St. John Fisher Cardinals by a score of 3-1 at the Roanoke College Kick-off Tournament.  

Sarah Hammock (Virginia Beach, VA) knocked in a header for the first goal of the contest early in the first half on an assist by Kennedy Jakubek and the Hornets never turned back.  

 

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 3, St. John Fisher 1

Records: Lynchburg (2-0), Si. John Fisher (0-2)

Venue: Kerr Stadium, Roanoke College, Salem, Va.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jakubek sent a cross into the box for Hammock to head it in for the lone goal of the first half just past the eight minute mark.

  • Jakubek added another assist early in the second half as she sent in a cross which found the foot of Mertens to give the Hornets a two goal lead.

  • Mertens once again utilized her speed to breakaway from Cardinal defenders to find the back of the net for her second goal of the contest in the 67th minute.

  • St. John Fisher's Emily Murray scored the Cardinal's only goal in the 77th minute,  

  • Delia LoSapio (Raleigh, NC) and Caitlin Dorsch (Virginia Beach, VA) split time in goal in the Hornet victory.  

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will play host of Salisbury for the Shellenberger Classic on Friday, September 8th.  The game is set to kickoff at 7:30 PM from Shellenberger Field.
