Volleyball splits opening day at Eastern Mennonite tournament

Lynchburg's volleyball team bested Mary Baldwin but lost its season-opener to Methodist on Friday.

Harrisonburg, Va. -- Lynchburg College's volleyball team split its first two matches of the 2017 season, falling to Methodist and sweeping Mary Baldwin on the first competition day of the year.

The Hornets got 22 kills from senior outside Mesa Willis (Dabneys, Va.) on the day, and Lauren Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va.) led the back row with 35 digs over the two matches.



Match 1: Methodist 3, Lynchburg 1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 26-24)

Match 2: Lynchburg 3, Mary Baldwin 0 (25-7, 25-5, 25-10)

Venue: Yoder Arena, Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va.



  • Methodist used efficient offense to win the day, hitting over .230 in both the first and third sets.

  • Lynchburg's Mesa Willis had a big start to her senior campaign, hitting .275 in the season-opening match with 15 kills. She also had 10 digs in the loss.

  • The Hornets heated up against Mary Baldwin in their nightcap, making just 11 attack errors in the entire match. Lynchburg hitters boasted a .458 clip in the first set.

  • Sophomore middle Disa Haugsdaul (Warrenton, Va.) found a groove with her serve, totaling seven aces against Mary Baldwin.
