Lynchburg, Va. -- Tradition, indeed, started Friday night.
University of Lynchburg's men's and women's swim teams kicked off the rebirth of the program after a 38-year hiatus with a dual-meet sweep of crosstown rival Randolph College.
The Hornet women were victorious in dominant fashion, 129-30, while Lynchburg's men won by a 104-85 margin.
Graduate student Alyssa Reed and freshman Molly Shand led the way for the Lynchburg women with two event victories apiece. Reed took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly, while Shand won the 1,000-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
On the men's side, freshman Kevin Bennett was Lynchburg's double event-winner with victories in the 200 free and 100 back.
Lynchburg's swim teams will be back in action Saturday in an exhibition meet with Liberty University's varsity women's team and men's club team at the Liberty Natatorium.
