Kansas City, Mo. -- University of Lynchburg senior forward Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, N.J.) has earned her spot as national player of the week by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
The forward scored six goals and had one assist for 13 points over the course of two victories for Lynchburg last week. She recorded back-to-back hat tricks for the first time since Angela Bosco scored seven goals in a two-match span in September 2014.
Mertens collected her first three goals Wednesday in a 5-0 win at home over St. Mary's (Md.), her first-career hat trick, which carried into that Saturday, accounting for half the Hornets' goals in a 6-0 victory against their crosstown-rival the Randolph WildCats. Mertens also notched an assist in the match.
She currently ranks tied for fourth among NCAA Division III goal-scorers with 11 this season, a mark that leads the ODAC.
