Hornet men's soccer advances past Randolph-Macon
LYNCHBURG, VA - The first-seeded Lynchburg Men's Soccer team defeated #8 Randolph-Macon College 4-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament on Saturday night.
Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half as both defenses held tough. Junior Kyle Symzak (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) broke the tie 2:07 into the second half as he collected the loose ball at the top of the box and netted it.
Lynchburg continued to add insurance goals in the half as senior Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) collected a long pass from fellow senior Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and scored at the 35:17 mark of the second half.
Senior Stephen Brooks (Fairfax, VA/Paul VI) made it 3-0 off a pass from junior Tyler Romano (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) just 1:44 after Bender's goal. Freshman Joe Kaiser (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored his first collegiate goal with 21:14 left in the game to make it a four-goal advantage.
Freshman Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) played 70:29 and made two saves then gave way to senior Danny Town (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) who worked 19:31 in goal and made four saves.
Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Matty Rocawich made four saves in the contest.
No. 1 seeded Lynchburg will advance to the second round of the ODAC Tournament and will face Randolph College on Wednesday at home on Shellenberger Field. Further details will be available on http://www.lynchburg.edu/athletics this week.
