The Academic All-America program is sponsored and voted on by members of College Sports Communicators (formerly College Sports Information Directors of America). The dual-emphasis award requires a student to have a 3.5 GPA and play a significant role on his or her team.

College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America program in 1952, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America scholar-athlete honors. Currently, College Sports Communicators sponsors Academic All-America programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country, along with the at-large category. Student-athletes must carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 and be a starter or significant contributor to his or her team to be eligible for nomination.
