Lynchburg men's soccer wins key conference game against Randolph
LYNCHBURG, VA - Lynchburg College men's soccer defeated conference rival Randolph College 2-1 Wednesday evening, as the Hornets remain undefeated in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Hornet sophomore Scott Colman (Yorktown, VA/York) scored just 1:46 into the first half off a pass from senior Hunter Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) to give Lynchburg a 1-0 lead. The two teams would not score for the rest of the first half, although Lynchburg peppered Randolph goalie Aaron Humphreys with seven more shots, but could not score.
WildCat Timothy Songer tied the game at the 31:54 mark of the second half, which happened to be the first conference goal that freshman goalie Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) has given up all season.
The contest remained close until Lynchburg senior Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) netted his second goal of the season with assists from fellow senior Matthew Rowe (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) and junior Shane Spanninger (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham).
Releford would finish with two saves through the contest, while Humphreys finished with five saves for Randolph.
Lynchburg (8-3-1/5-0) will return home on Saturday to face Bridgewater College at 4 p.m. Saturday's game will also be senior day and will feature the dedication of the Dr. Jack M. Toms '69 Track of Champions at halftime.
