Hornet Women Outlast W&L 1-0
Betsy Kwiatkowski Nets Game Winner
LYNCHBURG, VA - Senior forward Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson) broke a scoreless tie 58 minutes into the game and the Lynchburg College women's soccer team defeated Washington & Lee University 1-0 in an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match Friday evening. The program's eight seniors were honored prior to kickoff on Senior Night and as a part of LC's Homecoming festivities.
LC controlled much of the first half play, but the tough General defense kept the Hornets off the scoreboard despite a 12-1 edge in shots. At 58:03 of the second stanza, Kwiatkowski collected a loose ball 40 yards from the goal and out-raced two W&L defenders and into scoring position for the game's only tally. Lynchburg held a 29-4 advantage in total shots, but Washington & Lee keeper Emily Leary made nine saves to keep her team close. Jackie Bader (Fort Washington, MD/Bishop Ireton) needed to make just one save to preserve her fourth shutout of the season.
The win moves LC into a tie for the ODAC lead with a 6-0 mark, and the Hornets travel to Salem Wednesday evening for a first-place showdown at 7 p.m.
W&L falls to 6-4 and 4-2 ODAC.
