LC wins the ODAC title on PK's over Virginia Wesleyan

LYNCHBURG, VA - Lynchburg College sophomore Audrey Moore (Clifton, VA/Centreville) stopped Virginia Wesleyan College's final shot in the penalty shootout to give LC the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer title on Saturday night.

Before the late-game drama, both teams played a fierce game that eventually came down to the last shot. Junior Brittany Klippstein (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) scored the first goal of the game at 2:09 off a crossing pass from junior Joanie Snyder (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air).

It didn't take long for Virginia Wesleyan to answer back as Marlin Kristyn Anselmo scored on a penalty kick at 11:18 of the first half to tie the game at 1-1. LC scored next at the 26:14 mark of the first half as Klippstein fed senior Katie Santos (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop Ireton) for the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1.

The second-half featured close shots from both sides and as time winded down, Virginia Wesleyan scored the equalizer to make it 2-2. With 82:52 left in the game Marlin Danielle Stephens netted the tying goal to send it into overtime.

Both teams stayed even through both overtime periods, and as the game headed to the penalty shootout, the drama set in.

VWC took a 1-0 lead in the shootout off a goal from Meaghan DiBiase. Senior Danielle Crotty (Mason, OH/Mason) scored in the second round to make it 1-1. In the third round sophomore Jessica Gonzalez (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) netted it to give LC the 2-1 lead. Marlin's defender Jen Colwell tied it up in the fourth round at 2-2 and pushed it to the fifth round.

Klippstein scored on her goal to put the pressure on Virginia Wesleyan. Midfielder Courtney Whorten shot right and was stopped by Moore to end the game.

Lynchburg (17-2-2) earns an automatic bid into the Division-III NCAA Tournament and will now await word on where they play next. Details will be announced on Monday.
