LC Women Defeat Salisbury 2-1 in Shellenberger Classic

            LYNCHBURG, VA - Sophomore midfielder Jessica Gonzalez (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) scored from 35 yards out with 10 minutes left in the first half to lift the Lynchburg College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Salisbury University (MD) Saturday in the Shellenberger Memorial Classic.

            The Sea Gulls scored early on an Erin Mooney shot that deflected off an LC defender and into the net at the 12:14 mark. The Hornets answered six minutes later as Shelley Hoath (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) scored on a feed from Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson).  Gonzalez scored the deciding goal at 34:48 and the LC defense made the one-goal lead stand up.

            LC outshot SU 18-8 and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Jackie Bader (Fort Washington, MD/Bishop Ireton) made four saves for LC, while Melissa Orgera made five stops for Salisbury (2-3).

            Lynchburg (2-1) hosts Maryville College (TN) Sunday at 2 p.m., followed by Roanoke College and Salisbury at 4:30 p.m.
