Hornet's men's soccer wins first conference game against Virginia Wesleyan
LYNCHBURG, VA - Cam Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) scored the one and only goal of the match with only ten minutes left in regulation as Lynchburg men's soccer won its conference opener against Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 1-0 on Shellenberger Field on Wednesday night.
Cam had eight shots during the contest but only needed the one at the 79:53 mark of second half. Freshman goalie Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) made his first collegiate start after coming into the game Sunday in the second half. Releford has yet to relinquish a goal in his young career but was helped out by his defense Wednesday night. At the 14:37 mark, after Marlin forward John McKenzie beat Releford, the ball seemed to be destined for the back of the net until Hunter Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) kicked it out at the last second.
Releford finished the match with eight saves as Virginia Wesleyan goalie Alan Hinton made six saves in the contest.
Lynchburg (4-2/1-0) will travel to Salisbury to take on the Sea Gulls on Saturday at 2 p.m.
