#4 Women's Soccer Opens Season with 3-1 Win over Shenandoah
SALEM, VA - The fourth-ranked Lynchburg College women's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 3-1 victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon in the four-team Roanoke College Invitational.
Sophomore Shelley Hoath (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) opened the scoring at 10:18 on an assist from senior Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson). Jessica Gonzalez (pictured left - Springfield, VA/West Springfield) scored at 35 minutes even from Kristen Melchoiri (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) off a corner kick and LC took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Shenandoah's Hornets closed the gap 12 minutes after intermission on a penalty kick by Amber Womack. LC added an insurance goal with 10 minutes on the clock as Brittany Klippstein (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) converted a feed from Katie Santos (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop Ireton) to put the game out of reach.
Kat Terza made seven stops in net for Shenandoah (0-2). Lynchburg held a 27-2 edge in shots.
LC (1-0) faces Emory University (GA) Sunday at noon at the Roanoke Classic.
