LYNCHBURG, VA – Facing a 1-0 deficit with less than six minutes left in the game, Lynchburg College women's soccer rallied for two goals in the closing minutes to defeat Virginia Wesleyan College 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
With the win, Lynchburg clinches the first overall seed in the upcoming ODAC Championship Tournament.
Virginia Wesleyan struck first on the day with a goal from Danielle Stephens to give the Marlins 1-0 lead. LC shot seven times in the half, with VWC goalie Erica Keil making two saves.
Coming out of halftime in the second half, the Hornets fired 11 total shots, limiting Virginia Wesleyan to only five. Keil stopped the Hornets five times in the half, but could not stop junior Jessica Gonzalez's shot on a free kick 25 yards out from the goal. Gonzalez's third goal of the season made it a tie game at the 84:06 mark of the second half.
With the game knotted at one, it took only 48 seconds for Lynchburg to take the lead. Freshman Dessi Dupuy fed junior Kristen Melchiori on a breakaway who netted the game-winner with little over five minutes remaining in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Bader made one save in the contest as Lynchburg outshot the Marlins (15-2/8-2 ODAC) 18-8 in the match.
