Hornets Win Two at LC Invitational Tourney

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College volleyball team opened its 2012 season Saturday with a pair of victories at the LC Invitational Tournament in Turner Gym.

The Hornets opened with a 26-24, 25-12, 25-12 win over Meredith College. Sophomore Aricquel Payne slammed a match-high 14 kills and added eight digs, while senior Rachel Huffman tallied eight kills and three blocks. Senior Rebecca Loftis added seven kills and senior Marion Lozano had six, while senior Molly Deacon had 14 digs. Senior Rachel Turk handed out 17 assists and senior Brooke Moughon had 14.

Molly Markley had six kills for the Avenging Angels (1-1) and Jasmine Aguinaldo had 10 digs.

LC breezed to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-11 win in the second game against Mary Baldwin College. Loftis hit a match-best 14 kills and Payne had eight. Turk and Moughon combined for 25 assists and freshman Samantha Page had six service aces and seven digs.

Jonquil Brown hit six kills for the Fighting Squirrels (0-2) and Paige Babb had nine assists.

The Hornets (2-0) are slated to play Randolph College Sunday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference match in the last contest of the tourney. Randolph defeated Mary Baldwin in three sets earlier in the day Saturday and Meredith rallied to upend the WildCats in five games.
