W & L Downs Hornets in Four

LEXINGTON, VA – Washington and Lee University toppled the Lynchburg College volleyball team in four sets on Friday, 25-15, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-18.  It was the first game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) weekend for both teams.

In the first set, the Generals produced eight service aces, with three players each recording two of them.  Reigning ODAC player of the year M.A. Boles recorded six kills and Meghan Meleski assisted on nine kills throughout the set.

The second game was a back and forth, with the largest lead coming at 12-6 for the Generals.  LC made a comeback effort, coming as close as 17-16.  However, W & L would continue working to 25, with multiple players recording two or more kills, led by Boles who had four.  Maddie Kosar also registered two kills, including the game-winner.  Brittany Crawford registered four kills in the set to lead the Hornets.

The third set was much like the second, with neither team taking a very large lead.  The Hornets took a 9-6 advantage while Aricquel Payne was serving.  However, a couple of errors by both teams brought the score even at 11.  The rest of the way was close, with LC gaining a 22-19 advantage.  The Generals evened it up, but the Hornets took the last three points of the set, with a block by Marion Lozano and Rebecca Loftis finishing the set.

The fourth set continued the very close match.  There were eight ties between the two teams early on before Washington and Lee took the advantage a 13-12.  The Generals would not look back and take the match on an Anna Lausberg block.

Boles had a match-high 15 kills and Meleski earned a match-high 38 assists for the Generals (7-3 overall, 2-0 ODAC).

Payne and Sierra Strathy led the Hornets with 11 and 12 kills respectively, while Rachel Turk took over the sole setter role and had a team-high 27 assists.

LC (6-4,1-2) will continue its weekend with a game against Averett University at Washington and Lee on Friday night.
