Hornets Solidify Playoff Positioning with 3-1 Victory over Roanoke

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College volleyball team increased its chances of hosting in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament with a 25-17, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17 victory over Roanoke College Friday night.

The win, the fifth in a row for Lynchburg, moves the Hornets to 6-3 in the conference, good for fourth place with two matches to go. The top four seeds host in the first round of the conference tournament.

The Hornets started hot in the first game, hitting at a .382 clip to down the Maroons 25-17 without much trouble.

Roanoke rebounded in the second, leading 8-3 behind two kills from Samantha Klostermann and several Hornet errors. The Hornets were able to cut it to 22-21 on a kill by Sierra Strathy, but two Mackenzie Allen kills and one more from Klostermann ended the set.

 Lynchburg fell behind in the third set, 5-1, before outscoring Roanoke 24-9 the rest of the way. Ariquel Payne had seven of her 15 kills in the third set to set up the decisive fourth game.

The fourth set was all Hornets as LC led the entire way. Roanoke got no closer than two points.

Following Payne, Strathy was second for LC with 14 kills and three services aces. Amanda Perry had 10 kills and two blocks, while Payne and Mackenzie Ross had 21 and 17 digs respectively. Gabby Myers had 29 assists for LC while Ross contributed 22.

Klostermann had 11 kills for the Maroons (15-9/5-4) while Alexandra Martin and Jessica Block had 13 assists each. Mackenzie Tyree added 18 digs to lead Roanoke as Martin contributed 14.

Lynchburg (11-11/6-3) travels to Shenandoah University (10-13/2-5) Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. start.
