Hornet Volleyball Starts 2013 Season at CNU Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Lynchburg College volleyball team opened its 2013 season Friday with a pair of matches at the Christopher Newport University Captains Classic.

CNU, ranked #5 in the first NCAA Division III poll of the season, posted a 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 victory over LC in the day's first match. 

Junior Aricquel Payne paced Lynchburg with seven kills and nine digs, while freshman Mackenzie Ross tallied six kills, 11 assists and seven digs. Gabby Myers had a team-high 13 assists and added five kills and seven digs and Jennifer Garrett contributed seven digs, four kills and two service aces.

LC faced Edgewood College (WI) in the second match of the day and dropped a hard-fought 28-26, 25-22, 19-25, 25-12 decision. 

Payne paced the Hornets with 13 kills and 11 digs, and Sierra Strathy slammed eight kills with seven blocks. Garrett also had eight kills while Page and Brittany Crawford combined for 31 digs. Ross had 23 assists and Myers had 17.

LC (0-2) is scheduled to play Berry College (noon) and SUNY New-Paltz (2 p.m.) Saturday at CNU.
