Defensive Effort Carries Hornets to 1-0 Victory
LYNCHBURG, VA –The 14th-ranked Lynchburg College women's soccer team scored a goal early and had to hold on late to defeat Roanoke College 1-0 Friday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Hornets capitalized on a corner kick at 27:10 as Jade Woll stepped up to the right corner flag post and sent a ball into the box. Rachel Sadowski headed it on to Kelley Smith who put it away for the 1-0 lead.
Karsen Schottleutner made a save in the first half to preserve the one-goal advantage heading into the half.
Roanoke continued to threaten in the second half, getting a great opportunity to even the game with 18:36 left.
Ashley Barnes broke away up the right side of the field and attempted to center the ball. She had a forward in position to rip a shot, but Tori Dott hustled back on defense, knocking the ball out of the zone at the last minute with a sliding deflection.
Carolyn Sarbacher saved four balls for Roanoke (2-3-1/0-1).
Lynchburg outshot the Maroons 11-5 while also holding a 4-1 advantage in corners.
The Hornets (7-1/2-0) travel to Emory & Henry College (1-7/1-1) Tuesday for a 5 p.m. start.
