Hornets Fall at Virginia Wesleyan Despite Amazing First Set
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College volleyball team dominated the first set against Virginia Wesleyan College before ultimately falling to the Marlins, 14-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-22, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday.
Virginia Wesleyan tied the Hornets 4-4 before Lynchburg went on a run in the first set due in large part to a .417 hitting percentage. Sierra Strathy and Amanda Perry each contributed five kills in the set as the Marlin defense had trouble corralling the Lynchburg attack early.
Lynchburg had the advantage in the second set, up 24-23 on a Perry kill, before the Marlins rattled off three straight points to close it out and gain momentum for the final two sets.
The Hornets were led offensive by Perry and Strathy who each had 11 kills to go along with 24 assists from Mackenzie Ross. Sam Page contributed 18 digs as Aricquel Payne added 17 for Lynchburg.
Tiffany Barrett was the only Marlin (18-7/6-1) in double-figure kills as she posted 10 to go along with a team-leading 18 digs. Kirstin Sessoms led all players with 32 assists.
Lynchburg (11-10/4-3) returns home to face Emory & Henry College in ODAC action Friday at 7 p.m. as part of Homecoming.
