LC Shuts out Wasps on Senior Day and Homecoming
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team scored two-first half goals, including one by senior Josh Hinkle, and three in the second to defeat Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry College 5-0 during Saturday's Homecoming finale. LC honored Hinkle and fellow seniors Luke Moore, Trevor Davis, Frankie Winski, and David Yates prior to the win, which helped keep the Hornets in the top-two of the ODAC standings.
E&H got things going quickly, earning two corner kicks, the second one coming shortly after a Scott Zaring save. However, in 74 minutes of action, that would be the only save needed from Zaring. The Hornets took complete control afterwards, firing 12 shots over the next half-hour. Most sailed away from the net, while a few were stopped by Wasp goalie Didier Grillet. In the 38th minute, LC put one on the board as Jon Mackey came down the left side to score his first-career goal.
At the 41:42 mark in the first half, LC won a corner kick and Brandon Webster lined up for the service. He sent a perfect ball into the zone, where only the height of Hinkle could get to it as he headed in a goal on the day he was being honored.
In the second half, it was once again all Lynchburg. Earl Rimbey, Bryan Hall, and Christopher Dodd all scored goals, with Dodd's coming in the final seconds off a corner kick from Jairo Soto.
Grillet had a standout game in net for the Wasps (4-11 overall, 1-7 ODAC), stopping eight of the shots Lynchburg sent at him. Corey Budka came on in relief of Zaring and stopped both shots he saw. The Hornets overwhelming control of the game showed in the statistics as they outshot E&H 29-9, with a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.
LC (10-4, 7-1) will have its final regular-season home game on Tuesday. Lynchburg will host the Maroons of Roanoke College in a major ODAC clash, with RC currently first and the Hornets second in the ODAC standings. The game will start at 7 p.m.
