Big Second Half Carries No. 3 Hornets past Sweet Briar
AMHERST, VA – The Lynchburg College women's soccer team scored six goals in the second half Tuesday afternoon to down Sweet Briar College 6-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Hornets entered the week No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) poll, one spot higher than last poll. Lynchburg is in a virtual tie for No. 1 in the nation in the d3soccer.com poll, falling into second on a first-place vote tiebreaker.
Tuesday's match kept the Hornets undefeated despite a scoreless first half. Lynchburg had plenty of opportunities, ripping 17 shots while six were saved by Kat Day.
It took less than three minutes for the Hornets to pull ahead 2-0 in the second half as Jade Woll scored the first for Lynchburg while Angela Bosco found Dessi Dupuy for the second tally.
Woll paired with Samantha Bagherpour to find Bosco for Lynchburg's third score at 55:43.
Dupuy put the pressure on the Sweet Briar defensive line again 10 minutes later when she found Bosco in front of the net for her second goal of the game and 19th of the season.
Forty seconds later, Dupuy scored unassisted to make the game 5-0. It was also Dupuy's 19th goal of the season and 95th of her career. With the score, Dupuy moves into the top 25 nationally in Division III in all-time goals.
Lynchburg added one more score at 85:30 when Kara Schaffer sent a corner kick in to Rachel Cooke who scored her second of the season.
Lynchburg outshot the Vixens 38-1 while maintaining a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Day finished with 13 saves for Sweet Briar (6-7/3-7).
Lynchburg (17-0/11-0) travels to face a tough Rowan University (10-3-1) team for a non-conference 7 p.m. start on Thursday night.
