Hornet Men's Soccer Opens Season with 4-1 victory over Averett
SALEM, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 4-1 victory over Averett University Friday at the four-team Roanoke College Invitational.
Averett got on the board first, as Martin Kalmalm scored off of a corner kick 14 minutes in. Hornet freshman Collin Kashmer tied the score midway through the first half on a cross from senior Luke Moore.
Lynchburg took control of the game with a pair of goals separated by the 15-minute halftime break. Sophomore Adam Reynolds found the back of the net with 17 seconds left in the first half, and Moore scored himself from sophomore Thomas Salamone 1:30 after intermission. Freshman David Johnson headed in an insurance goal with under 20 minutes to play.
The Hornets dominated the important statistical categories, out-shooting the Cougars 34-3 with a 16-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior transfer Scott Zaring stopped made one save to record his first win as a Hornet in net. John Matrisciano made 10 stops for Averett (0-1).
The Hornets (1-0) will face off with Case Western Reserve University Saturday at 5 p.m. back in Salem.
