LC Records Comeback Victory over Roanoke College
SALEM, VA – The Lynchburg College volleyball team came back from deficits in both the fourth and fifth set to take a five-game 23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13, victory over Roanoke College on Saturday. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win gave them the second win in a row on the weekend.
The fifth set looked bad for the Hornets, as Roanoke jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but LC fought back valiantly, winning seven-straight points with two service aces coming from Sam Page. RC took the next point, but that would be its last lead. Jennifer Garrett and Brittany Crawford notched kills, while the Maroons had three errors to give Lynchburg 15-13 win.
In the first set, the action went back and forth as would be the story all day. LC started off with a quick 3-0 lead, but RC came right back, notching four of the next five points. Both teams held several leads during the first, but a late attack error gave the Maroons a 22-18 lead, which was the largest for either team. However, the Hornets came back, highlighted by kills from Crawford, Aricquel Payne, and Mesa Willis. But, at 24-23 in favor of RC, Allison White hit her fifth kill of the set, to give it to the Maroons.
White started off the second set in similar fashion, hitting two kills and helping Roanoke to a quick 4-1 advantage. As was the case in the first, Lynchburg came back taking a 7-6 lead after a service ace by Maral Tsolmon. The back and forth continued as RC took a narrow lead of 14-12, with LC storming right back to take the lead at 16-15. Five more ties would occur in the before Payne finished a pass from Lynn Walsh to give the set to the Hornets, 25-23.
The third set was the anomaly during the match. After Roanoke and Lynchburg split the first six points, RC won seven of the next nine points, taking a 10-5 lead. The advantage never went below four over the rest of the game.
Lynchburg came out strong in the fourth, controlling the initial action, gaining a lead of 8-3. However, a reversal in momentum occurred, and the Maroons went on a 10-1 run. In a return to the norm of the first two sets, the Hornets cut the lead to one, before RC brought it back to 16-13. LC rattled off six straight points, two coming from blocks by Payne and two kills from Sierra Strathy. Once again, Roanoke came back to tie the score at 19 and 20 all. The Hornets went on to win the set 25-22, with Payne hitting two more kills in the last run, setting up the pivotal fifth game.
White led the Maroons (12-4 overall, 1-2 ODAC) with 15 kills, while Jessica Block and Alexandra Martin combined for 49 assists. Walsh notched a match-high 42 assists, while Payne hit a game-high 16 kills.
LC (8-7, 2-1) comes to Turner Gymnasium for its first ODAC home game on Wednesday. It will be a white-out game against Randolph-Macon College, with the match slated to start at 7 p.m.
