#12 CNU Scores 5-1 Win Over LC Men
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team lost a non-conference matchup 5-1 against 12th-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday night.
A quick Captains offense proved to be too much. Late goals in first half for CNU put Lynchburg in a tough hole to come out of. Two-time All-American Jalon Brown scored the first goal off a cross from Patrick Burns in the 35th minute. Burns provided another assist to Henry Gotay five minutes later and then scored a goal himself right after to give the Captains a 3-0 edge at the half.
David Yates scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to put the LC on the board.
Lynchburg was unable to keep the momentum going as Ryan Balfour collected a loose ball and found the net for CNU. This was followed by a second goal by Gotay that was assisted by Zach Douglass.
The rain fell all night long at Shellenberger field resulting in difficult conditions to play in. It was a rough game for both teams; CNU led the foul total 18-15. Three yellow cards were also issued throughout the match (LC 2 – CNU 1).
Sam Cannon provided five saves on 16 shots for the Hornets. Nolan Mann had a pair of saves for the Captains (7-1-1).
Lynchburg (4-4) will resume play in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Saturday at 7 p.m. at Eastern Mennonite University.
