Hornets Second Half Goals Seal 2-0 Victory over Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Marina Clark and Morgan Singer scored in the second half to give the #6 Lynchburg College women's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College. LC waited until Thursday because of rain to handily defeat its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe.
The Hornets controlled the first 20 minutes of the game, maintaining possession and registering five shots during that period. However, each shot sailed wide or high, helping the Marlins preserve the tie.
Over the next two minutes, VWC earned its best opportunities of the half, with one shot blocked and LC goalkeeper Tess Frelick making a stop on the second one. Lynchburg took back the momentum shortly after, registering four shots. Clark and Singer had shots blocked, while shots by Angela Bosco and Jenn Snyder were saved. Virginia Wesleyan ripped a last ditch effort near the end of the period, but the teams would go into the half scoreless.
LC wasted no time going on the offensive in the second stanza, getting quick shots from Dessi Dupuy and Bosco. Dupuy's shot was saved out of bounds, with both of Bosco's attempts being blocked by VWC defenders.
In the 59th minute, the Marlins sent a cross into the box, but the stifling Hornet defense was there to clear it out of the zone. However, the Hornets regained possession, went down the field and Clark blasted a shot from 40 yards out to give LC the 1-0 advantage.
Both teams had opportunities to either tie the score or add to the lead, but nothing happened until the 79th minute. Jade Woll sent a through ball into the middle of the box, and Singer finished off the perfect pass for the 2-0 lead. Each goalie and crossbar made a save in the last 10 minutes of the game to preserve the 2-0 victory.
Megan Gerhart stopped five shots for Virginia Wesleyan (4-4-2 overall, 2-1 ODAC). The Hornets outshot the Marlins 20-9 and earned four more corners during the contest.
LC (8-0, 3-0) will finish its short two-game road trip this Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University. The ODAC tilt will kick-off in Harrisonburg at 4:30 p.m.
