Oglethorpe hangs on for 2-1 Win Over LC Men
Lynchburg, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team came up just short in Saturday's game against Oglethorpe University (GA) with a final score of 2-1 in the Shellenberger Memorial Classic.
Physical is an understatement to describe the battle at Shellenberger Field. Aggressive efforts by both sides made for an exciting game all the way through. However, it led to a total of five cautions and 32 fouls for both teams.
A first half goal by Joe McGee with an assist from Angel Salome put Oglethorpe on the board first.
Just after the break, Hanno Antoni scored Oglethorpe's second goal of the day with a blast from near midfield.
Lynchburg's heavy pressure finally paid off for a Josh Hinkle goal off a long Bryan Hall throw-in that made its way into the box.
Brandon Webster came off the bench to provide strong strikes and great opportunities up front for Lynchburg throughout the second half.
Despite a series of corners late in the half by the Hornets, keeper Vaughn Moore and the Stormy Petrels' defense held strong to preserve the win. Moore played solid in goal for Oglethorpe (2-2), recording seven saves on 16 shots from the Hornets.
The Shellenberger Memorial Classic continues Sunday as Lynchburg (2-1) takes on Greensboro College at 4 p.m.
