Watt's Hat Trick Leads Greensboro Past Lynchburg 3-2
LYNCHBURG, VA – Greensboro College's Shaun Watt collected a hat trick as the Pride took down the Lynchburg College men's soccer team 3-2 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Shellenberger Memorial Classic.
The scoring started early on Sunday as the first shot of the game resulted in a goal. Craig Page had the ball for the Pride and found Watt for the initial tally just over seven minutes into the match.
Greensboro had another good opportunity at 27:51 when Joel Cortez ripped a shot that was saved by Hornet keeper Scott Zaring. Lynchburg took advantage of the stop, scoring 40 seconds later as Brandon Webster knotted the game with an unassisted tally.
The Hornets took the lead a short time later as a yellow card was assessed to Greensboro, allowing David Yates a penalty kick opportunity. Yates got the ball past the keeper and Lynchburg held a lead into the second half.
The final 45 minutes belong to Greensboro as Liam Buckley found Watt for a score at 59:43 to tie up the match. Robbie Barnes found Watt one more time for the hat trick as the Pride to the lead for good at 79:37.
Lynchburg outshot Greensboro 16-11 while the Pride maintained a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Logan Rodhe made six saves for Greensboro (2-1) while Zaring contributed three for Lynchburg.
Lynchburg (2-2) travels to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, September 13 for a 1 p.m. start.
