CNU Scores 3-2 Win over #4 LC Women's Soccer
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Gabby Gillis scored early in overtime Sunday night to lift the Christopher Newport University women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Lynchburg College in non-conference play. The Hornets are ranked #4 in NCAA Division III and #1 in the South Atlantic Region, while the Captains are #8 in the region.
LC took a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the game, as senior Morgan Singer knocked in a feed from sophomore Hannah Olds. Gillis answered at the 34:26 mark of the first half, heading in a corner ball from Lindsay Mondloch and the game was tied at intermission. The Hornets had a golden opportunity to take the lead as time expired in the half, but Captain keeper Carly Maglio got a hand on a long Hornet shot and tipped it off the crossbar and out.
The Hornets retook the lead in the 59th minute when Emily Maxwell headed in a corner kick from Kennedy Jakubek. Just five minutes later the score was knotted again off a Kayla Locklear tally. Lynchburg had another outstanding chance to take the lead just before the end of regulation, but Maglio made a diving stop on a header than then hit the goalpost.
Gillis gave the Captains the win at 92:22 from about six yards out on a double assist from Victoria Perry and Allie McWilliams.
Tess Frelick made six stops for the Hornets, including several one-on-one opportunities. Maglio made nine saves.
LC outshot CNU (11-3-1) 21-18 and held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Hornets (15-2) travel to Shenandoah University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game Friday at 7 p.m. Lynchburg is 8-0 in conference play while SU is 6-1.
