Va. Wesleyan escapes with 2-1 OT victory over LC in ODAC Tourney
LYNCHBURG, VA – A loose ball late in overtime trickled into the net to give the fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over #4 Lynchburg College in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament.
The Hornets controlled the majority of the overtime period, earning two corner kicks. At the 98:37 mark, a long kick went into the Hornets' end and several players converged upon it, and bounced off an LC defender and into the net for an own goal to end the contest.
The first half of play went back and forth affair with exceptional goalkeeping by LC junior
Cory Budka and Marlin senior Connor Kirkham. The goalies tailed four saves and each made crucial run-outs to deny shot attempts. The Marlins were able to net the game's first goal 14 minutes into action when senior midfielder Alex Castelli fed freshman defender Andrew Freeman with a centering pass. LC had multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to put one past Kirkham as they went into halftime trailing 1-0.
The offensive pressure displayed in the latter part of the first half carried into the second half as LC out-shot Va. Wesleyan 18-9 and held an advantage in corner kicks 7-1. In the 71

Austin Kues, who headed in the game tying goal.
LC falls to 10-4-4 on the season. Virginia Wesleyan College moves to 9-5-3 advances onto the ODAC semifinals this Saturday to face top seed Washington & Lee University.
