Lynchburg College Men's Soccer Ties Randolph College 2-2 in ODAC Opener

LYNCHBURG, VA- There was a flair for the dramatic Saturday night on Shellenberger Field as the Lynchburg College men's soccer squad tied crosstown rival Randolph College 2-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match that was highlighted with nine total cards.

The Hornets would sting the WildCats first when sophomore forward Fredy Flores headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Matt Truslow to give LC a 1-0 advantage 11 minutes into the match. Randolph College would answer during the 24th minute when WildCat midfielder Nicolas Rodriguez crossed a pass to Travis Brown who then made an acrobatic turn midair to even the game at 1-1. The first half was very physical between the ODAC opponents as there were 14 fouls and four yellow cards before the teams' took a 1-1 tie into halftime.

LC struck first in the second half when sophomore midfielder Jon Mackey netted a pass from Flores during the last second of the 60th minute. The WildCats again had an answer, this time from sophomore midfielder Sam Griffith who found the back of the net off of a feed from midfielder Troy Jurney with just nine minutes remaining in regulation.

Aggressive play abounded in the latter minutes of the second half, as there were two WildCat yellow cards and a Hornet red card in the last six minutes of regulation. Due to the red card, LC was forced to play a man-down the final 21 minutes.  Lynchburg had an opportunity in the final 10 seconds of regulation on a breakaway from Flores before Randolph goalkeeper Matt Tourbin ran out to stop the shot that sent both players to the ground as time expired in regulation even at 2-2.

LC had five shots and a corner kick in the second overtime, but the Hornets were unable to find the game-winning goal. Randolph College, who had a man advantage, was able to put up just one shot before the game ended in a tie. Cory Budka made three saves for the Hornets, as did Tourbin. LC out-shot the visitors 18-10 and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

LC is now 4-1-1 (0-0-1 ODAC) after tonight's tie and Randolph is 2-3-1 (0-0-1 ODAC). The Hornets will travel to Newport News, VA Wednesday to take on nationally-ranked Christopher-Newport University at 7 p.m.
