Hornet Women's Soccer Defeats Guilford 5-0
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's soccer team defeated Guilford College 5-0 Wednesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match. The Hornets, ranked #4 in this week's NCAA Division III National Poll, had five different goal scorers on the day and out-shot their guests 40-0.
The Hornets scored in the first two minutes of play. Following a corner kick, sophomore Emily Maxwell headed in a cross from Marina Clark to make the score 1-0. After 41 minutes of scoreless soccer, LC again scored on a header, this time from Mckenzie Frederick on a feed from Elizabeth Oden.
Sophomore Frances Foster put LC's third goal on the board in the 61st minute, and Natalie Deacon found Kelley Smith soon thereafter to push the lead to 4-0. Caitlin Mertens added an insurance goal off a rebound with three minutes to play.
Keeper Maggie Albert made seven stops for Guilford (3-6-1/1-3 ODAC). Lynchburg held a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hornets (10-1) travel to Washington & Lee University Saturday at 11 a.m. Both Lynchburg and W&L are tied for first place in the conference with identical 3-0 league records. Virginia Wesleyan, also 3-0, plays Eastern Mennonite University later this evening.
