#8 Women's Soccer and Bridgewater End In Scoreless Draw, 0-0

Box Score

Harrisonburg, Va. -- #8 Lynchburg Women's Soccer outperformed the Bridgewater Saturday afternoon but the Eagles defense, which ranks second in the ODAC, forced the game into overtime and eventually ended in a goaless draw, 0-0.

After being held scoreless for the first time this season against Virginia Welseyan, the Hornets looked to find the back fo the net after scoring 11 goals in the three games before the tie but the ladies were up against an Hayley Talbott, the Eagles goalkeeper, who is fourth in the ODAC with a goals against average of .44.

Both teams challenged the opponent's backline but the attempts on goal either missed the frame or were easily handled by the keepers. The Hornets once again held the advantage in the first half as freshman Alyssa Rudy fired off two shots while five other Hornets added one shot each, giving Lynchburg the edge on shots 7-2. Bridgewater's lone two shots came from Isabella Weigel but both sailed wide.

The second half provided a few more threatening attacks for both sides. The Eagles had the first good attempt on goal as Weigel had a breakaway and senior goalie Tess Frelick had to make herself big as she came off her line and forced the Bridgewater forward into a shot that missed left.

The Hornets then strung together a group of great attempts on goal. The first came from senior Kelley Smith after she corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot that had the keeper beat but glanced of the crossbar and over the goal. Over the next 10 minutes sophomore Caitlin Mertens had two opportunities to put the Hornets up but the Bridgewater defense denied both chances.

With regulation not enough, the match headed into overtime. The first period of extra time was all Hornets, collecting four shots and four corners and denying the Eagles the opportunity to get into the box, let alone get off a shot.

With 10 minutes left to find an equalizer, the Hornets started pushing up as senior Natalie Deacon made multiple runs forward well into the Bridgewater half to help get more Hornets into the box. The ladies had the chances to clinch the match but their headers were just a bit too high and their shots just barely missed the posts.

Mertens finished the game with eight shots while senior Marina Clark and sophomore Kennedy Jakubek contributed with two shots each as well. Frelick recorded one save and extended her shutout streak to eight games with today's effort.

The Hornets will look to return to their scoring ways when they host Emory & Henry, who they beat 4-0 last year, on Oct. 5th at 6:00 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
