Box Score Lexington, Va. -- The top two teams in the ODAC faced off Wednesday afternoon and after 90 minutes the Generals edged the Hornets, 2-1, to give Lynchburg their first loss of the season.
Though the game was not considered a conference matchup, the matchup would still play heavily into both sides seasons with regional records at stake.
The Generals struck early after Dylan Ritch scored off of a free kick just outside the box in the 6th minute.
The Hornets struggled to get any attempts on goal in the early going but in the 25th minute, they broke through. Junior Cameron Noonan sent a into the box and senior Ben Grossfuss climbed the ladder and flicked the service with his head and into the back of the net.
The Hornets outshot the Generals, 7-5, but the score would stay the same as the horn sounded for the end of the first half.
In the 63rd minute, Washington & Lee found the back of the net, with which turned out to be the game winner. The Hornets were doomed by fouls in the second half after being whistled 16 times against the Gernals six.
Junior Fredy Flores and Grossfuss led the Hornets with three shots while junior Jon Mackey contributed with two more.
The hornets look to bounce back when they host Bridgewater this Saturday for Homecoming at 7 p.m.
