#10 Women's Soccer Tripped Up by Washington and Lee, 1-0

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. – The Lynchburg Women's Soccer team was defeated by conference rival Washington and Lee, 1-0, Wednesday night. The loss was the first on the year and first ODAC loss since the 2009, also to Washington and Lee.  The Generals found the back of the net during the 54th minute and held off a late Hornet push forward to secure the victory.

A scoreless first half included seven Lynchburg shots to just two for Washington and Lee and an advantage in corner kicks was not enough to give an edge to either team. Lynchburg forward Emily Sanchez had the best chance with a break away strike that went whispering by the left post in the closing minutes of the half.

The second half was much more balanced with eleven total shots between the two squads but the Generals were the ones to find the back fo the net. In the 54th minute Danielle Spickard fed Tricia Jesse for a header that trickled in. the goal was the first for Hornet goalkeeper Tess Frelick since Sept. 3rd against Johns Hopkisn. The senior keeper made two saves on the night while W&L goalkeeper Maggie Nolan recorded four. Nolan would go on to make two critical saves in the final 10 minutes of regulation that ultimately sealed a General victory.

After tonight's loss Lynchburg drops to 8-1-3 (3-1-1 ODAC) while Washington and Lee improves to 9-3 (5-1 ODAC).

The Hornets will remain at home this Saturday when they play the ODAC-leading Shenandoah University Hornets (11-3, 5-0) at 3 p.m. for Homecoming Weekend.
