#17 Men's Soccer Downs Emory & Henry On Senior Night, 3-0

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Men's Soccer team honored six seniors before the game and gave them a proper home finale defeating Emory & Henry on Wednesday night, 3-0.

The Hornets owned the possesion in the first half, firing 10 shots while the defense stood strong and did not allow the Wasps to put together a threatening attack, keeping them quiet and not allowing a shot of any kind.

After multiple attempts on goal, the Hornets struck gold in the 34th minute. After making a run down the left side, junior Fredy Flores had an initial cross blocked but regained possession and sent in another service. After making his way into the box, junior Nate Berning read the curving cross perfectly, launched himself vertically and sent a shot bounding past the outstretched Wasp keeper into the right side of the net.

Juniors Ryan Mayolo and Jon Mackey and freshman Sherman Mitchell would test the Emory & Henry goalie again in the waining minutes of the first half but the score would remain 1-0 as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime.

Following the break, the Wasps came out hot and made sophomore Dylan McLaurin work to keep the Hornet lead with a three shot sequence in the 51st minute which included two saves from McLaurin.

Regaining their composure, the Hornets settled back in and extended their lead to 3-0 as the sophomore pair of Zach Thomas and Ryan Pikunas would net unassisted goals in a five minute stretch midway through the second half.

Senior Cory Budka got the nod in goal but McLaurin earned the win, moving to 13-1-3 while junior Sam Cannon saw 25 minutes of action after entering for McLaurin in the second half. Four different Hornets recorded two shots including Berning, Flores, and junior Jon Mackey.

Following the victory Wednesday night the Hornets inch closer to earning the top seed in the ODAC Tournament but will have to secure a favorable result at Roanoke this Saturday at 6 p.m.
