Box Score Roanoke, Va. -- The Women's Soccer team dominated both sides of the ball Wednesday night, earning a 1-0 victory over Roanoke.
The Hornets tested the Roanoke goalie early and often, unleashing seven dangerous shots in the first 25 minutes. The most threatening attempt came from sophomore Caitlin Mertens who sent a firecracker on goal but was denied after the Maroon keeper made a diving save.
Less than a minute later the Lynchburg persistence would pay off as senior Marina Clark opened the scoring with a replica of her goal against CNU this past Sunday. Senior Kelley Smith serviced a corner into the box and Clark got off a shot which deflected off a defender and found its way back to Clark's feet, who fired another shot which found the right side of the net. The goal was Clark's third on the season and 20th of her career.
After halftime, the Hornets continued to send a flurry of shots on goal but Sam Martin, the Maroon goalkeeper, recorded 10 saves on the night and kept the Hornets off the scoreboard for the entire second half.
Clark and Mertens led the Hornets with five shots each while junior Emily Maxwell added three and Smith and junior Rachel Cooke pitched in with two a piece.
The women's soccer team will wrap up the regular season with Senior Day this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Eastern Mennonite.
