Grossfuss Scores in OT to Lift Hornets over Royals, 2-1

Box Score

Harrisonburg, Va. -- Men's Soccer traveled north to Eastern Mennonite Tuesday night where they defeated the Royals, 2-1, in overtime thanks in part to senior forward Ben Grossfuss' two goals, one of which was the game-winner with just nine seconds left in the first overtime period.

The Hornets held a 9-7 shot advantage over EMU in the first half but were unable to capitalize as both goalkeepers Dylan McLaurin of Lynchburg and Matthew Overacker handed in solid performances in between the pipes.

Hard work and scrappy play helped Lynchburg strike first in the 56th minute. Freshman Jack Ashby hustled to a ball that was bounding towards the end line and flicked it back across goal and Grossfuss put his head to it, giving his team the 1-0 lead

The Royals responded with a goal of their own just two minutes later when Parker Leap netted his seventh goal of the season, which is third best in the ODAC.  Both teams would look to counter in the latter minutes of the second half but neither were able to finish off any chances and the fans would get some free soccer.

Rough play continued into the extra frame and multiple free kicks led to threatening opportunities for both sides but neither side could convert. As the clock began to wind down and the game looked to be heading into a second overtime, junior Fredy Flores sent a long ball from midfield ahead of Grossfuss who took one touch and netted the game-winner with a mere nine seconds remaining in the period. The goal was the second on the day and the sixth on the season for the forward.

The Hornets outshot EMU, 24-11, but the Royals held the advantage in corners awarded, 7-6.

The Hornets will travel to Randolph-Macon this Saturday for a 3 p.m. kickoff against the Yellow Jackets, who last played Emory & Henry on October 1, recording a 4-0 victory to stay undefeated in conference play.
