#16 Women's Soccer Uses Balanced Attack for 3rd Shutout

Box Score

For Immediate Release - 9/11/2016

Roanoke, VA – A different Hornet scored five of the six goals on Sunday for Women's Soccer, as Lynchburg dominated Berry College 6-0 in Day 2 of the Roanoke College Kickoff. The Hornets have won their last three games by a total of 14-0.

The scoring got started with sophomore Sarah Hammock, following up her first goal of the season the day before, tallying goal number two 16:27 into the first half. Just over 17 minutes later, Kennedy Jakubek scored from the left side on the Vikings goalkeeper Jackie McGivney. For good measure, Jakubek found the back of the net for a second time, from the same side, with twenty five ticks left on the clock in the first half. The sophomore has six points on three goals this season.

The second half would start without Tess Frelik in the cage for Lynchburg after facing just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. That made way for Delia Losapio who played just north of 32 minutes, making one save on the only shot that came her way. Everyone saw time between the pipes for the Hornets when Freshman Caitlin Dorsch stepped in for roughly 13 minutes, stopping 2 shots on goal.

Elsewhere on the field, the Hornets were not slowing down. Hannah Olds took a pass from Caitlin Mertens just 3:08 into the second half, grabbing her second goal in as many days. Olds leads the team with 10 points on 4 goals and 3 assists. 2:18 later, Olds returned the favor for Mertens as the sophomore was able to pick up her second goal of the season, sending the ball into the right side of the net.

The goals-fest was capped off by senior midfielder Elizabeth Oden sailing a ball over the head of McGivney for her first goal of the season and finishing off the Vikings 6-0.

The Hornets outshot Berry 19-5 with 4 saves as a team, while causing 2 yellow cards to be drawn against the Vikings.

Next up for the Hornets will be a matchup with Southern Virginia, Friday night, under the lights of Shellenberger Field at 7:00pm.
