Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- For the second game in a row, the Lynchburg Women's Soccer team has scored six goals and held their opponents scoreless as they beat Southern Virginia 6-0 on Friday night.
The shots and scoring were spread out evenly through both halfs. Speedy sophomore Caitlin Mertens got free in the box scored on a touch after senior Camille Bartley provided a service from nearly the sideline, putting Lynchburg up 1-0.
Senior Kelley Smith beautifully fed junior Hannah Olds for another goal in the 21st minute and three minutes later senior Samantha Bagherpour one-timed a magnificent layoff by sophomore Sarah Hammock to increase the lead to three goals.
The seond half was much in the same but with more shots as the Hornets nearly doubled their shots in the second half.
Bagherpour sent a corner into the box and senior defender Emily Maxwell got in on the action with a powerful header that beat the keep and into the top right corner, while Olds collected her second goal of the night on a spectacular through ball from freshman midfilder Emily Sanchez. A freshman duo rounded out the Hornet scoring when Georgie Duggan supplied Taylor Stevens who made sure to find the back of the net.
The 16th-ranked Hornets showed their defensive might as they allowed the Knights to only get off two shots, both of which were not on target.
The ladies hit the road for an away tilt with Gettysburg College on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 5:00 pm and return to Shellenberger Field on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 pm when they host Randolph-Macon.
