Box Score Roanoke, Va. -- With sophomore Clay Van Gieson and junior Collin Kashmer tallying goals, the Lynchburg Men's Soccer team defeated N.C. Wesleyan 2-0 in the season-opener Friday evening which was played at Roanoke College.
The beginning of the first half was dominated by the N.C. Wesleyan, as they earned two corner kicks and fired a shot on goal but the next 10 was all Lynchburg. The Hornets opened up the scoring at the 10:41 mark with junior Ryan Mayolo lofting a corner kick into the box where Van Gieson beautifully headed the service into the left side of the net. The two teams traded shots for the remainder of the half with none of them finding the mark.
The second half began and in the first 15 minutes there were more fouls than shots but just before the hour mark, Lynchburg struck again as junior Fredy Flores set up Kashmer who slotted the shot past the keeper and into the side netting. The Battling Bishops would record 4 corners and 2 shots in the final 10 minutes but could not break into the scoreline.
Hornets goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin recorded four saves and earned a shutout in the victory, while Flores and senior Thomas Salamone fired off two shots and a total of seven different Hornets were able to get off one shot.
The victory puts the men at 1-0-0 and will wrap-up the Roanoke College Kick-Off at 4pm on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a match against Messiah College.
