Flores' header helps men's soccer sting Roanoke

Box Score

Salem, Va. -- Lynchburg College's men's soccer team won its Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener in dramatic fashion Saturday night, as Fredy Flores (Alexandria, Va.) headed in the golden goal in the 92nd minute for the Hornets' 1-0 overtime victory at Roanoke College.

Saturday's was Lynchburg's third-straight 1-0 win.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 1, Roanoke 0, OT

Records: Lynchburg (6-1-1, 1-0 ODAC), Roanoke (5-3-1, 0-1 ODAC)

Venue: Kerr Stadium, Roanoke College, Salem, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Lynchburg defense withstood a first-half assault from the Maroons. Hornets keeper Dylan McLaurin (Stafford, Va.) corralled five saves in the 45-minute period.

- After McLaurin made his sixth save early in the second, the LC defense buckled down. Lynchburg didn't allow a shot-on-goal in the final 33 minutes of play.

- The Hornets' aggressiveness to start overtime paid off right away. LC earned a corner kick right away, and 1:12 into the sudden-death period, Clay Van Gieson (Gloucester, Va.) found Flores, who headed the ball high off the crossbar and watched it bounce in for the victory.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg returns to non-conference play in the mid-week, although against a fellow ODAC school. The Hornets play Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field. The match will not count in the ODAC standings.
