Lynchburg, Va. -- Lynchburg College's women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 3-2 to Virginia Wesleyan, Saturday night on Shellenberger Field.

Georgie Duggan (Stafford, Va.) scored the first goal for the Hornets in the 53rd minute. A few minutes later, junior Caitlin Mertens (Succasunna, NJ) notched a goal, assisted by a terrific through-ball from freshman Dana Seavey (Mendham, NJ).

VWU bounced back with three unanswered goals in the final 31 minutes, all scored by sophomore Alex Davidson.

Final: Virginia Wesleyan 3, Lynchburg 2

Records: Lynchburg 6-1, Virginia Wesleyan 5-3-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The first half of the match started off slow with only three shots from Lynchburg and two from VWU.

• After halftime, Lynchburg took the lead with an unassisted goal off the post by Duggan.

• Mertens, assisted by Seavey, gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead over the Marlins.

• Davidson sparked a change in pace with  game had a change in pace after a direct kick 20-yard goal by Davidson. Less than a minute later, Davidson tied the game, 2-2, with a goal assisted by Zoe Traficante.

• Davidson added a third score in the 86th minute to give VWU the win.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets hit the road again Wednesday, Sept. 27, to face Eastern Mennonite in a Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.
