Men's Soccer

Kues' lone goal leads men's soccer over No. 5 W&L

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College men's soccer team made use of its lone first-half goal, defending the narrow lead to the tune of a 1-0 victory over No. 5-ranked Washington and Lee on Wednesday evening. Although the game featured two Old Dominion Athletic Conference rivals, it counted as a non-conference game in the standings.

Austin Kues (High Point, N.C.) scored the lone goal of the contest, deflecting a Michael Zhang (Leesburg, Va.) shot past the W&L defense.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 1, Washington and Lee 0

Records: Lynchburg 7-1-1, Washington and Lee 6-1-1

Venue: Shellenberger Field, Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Hornets came out in control of the match early on, out-shooting Washington and Lee 12-1 in the first half. Despite the pressure, Lynchburg couldn't break through until the 41st minute. Shortly after a corner kick, Zhang launched a shot that Kues deflected into the goal for the lead.

- Lynchburg keeper Dylan McLaurin (Stafford, Va.) saved a would-be game-tying goal a minute after Kues' score. McLaurin did it twice more in the second half, and the senior finished with five saves in sum.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets resume ODAC play on Saturday evening at 7, when they will play host to Eastern Mennonite. Lynchburg will recognize the Forest Youth Athletic Association at that match.
